Bjørn O. Hopland has been with Microsoft for 14 years. The first 8 years building and leading the Microsoft Consulting Services practice in Norway. Throughout this period, he did extensive work with large enterprises in oil, telecom, engineering, and government as project coach, focusing on building high performance teams, and ensuring project success through high people focus, and good risk management. These works lead him to the role as HR Director for Microsoft Norway, where he built the framework for high performance healthy people management. Currently Bjørn works to promote and ensure that leaders and HR in the 12 countries of the Microsoft Western Europe Area executes on the global Microsoft people strategy, adapted to local environment. The most important strategic areas for Microsoft are leadership and management development, talent management, culture and values, and operational excellence. To achieve good results requires work with highly distributed country teams in HR, driving change through several area projects with members in virtual teams across the countries. The results are shared internally along with best practices. Before Bjørn came to Microsoft, he worked 7 years for Hewlett-Packard and 5 years for Oracle. Both places he worked in technical-, sales- and marketing roles. He has a Master of Science in Engineering from the Technical University of Trondheim, and did his military service in the Norwegian Navy as a teacher at the cadet academy and has taken additional education in project management, risk management, Human Resources management, and coaching.
