Performance Management

Vienna, 23 February 2010

Executive Summary

The number of employees that are highly disengaged has doubled since the beginning of 2008. Our research efforts have focused on bridging the gaps - how to retain high performers, manage out low performers, and improve the productivity of the broader workforce. All too often the power structure of the company does not reflect the leadership development system and performance is “Darwinian” in selection. Business leaders keep saying yes to impossible ideas and HR & OD professionals inherit lots of hardship! Sound familiar?

The first day is designed to shed light on the resources now needed, and on approaches to advising the more powerful stakeholders on the realities of where the company must invest, what needs to be done, what it will cost to be successful and where we need to focus our time and effort to ensure our contributions are sustainable.

To conclude Fons Trompenaars will lead an exclusive half-day master class on “The Key to Sustainable Organizational Performance”.

Thought Leadership Keynote

Towards a Sustainable Performance Culture

In the present economic crisis it is even more evident that past financial performance alone is no indicator for the future. We need a new paradigm to manage and secure current and future sustainable performance on all levels: individual, team and organization. Trompenaars Hampden-Turner’s research reveals that opportunities and success depend on how well an organization’s leadership and management address and resolve the tensions resulting from different value orientations between the five stakeholders in organizations - Business Processes, Employees, Shareholders, Society and Clients/Suppliers. We refer to these tensions as the 'Ten Golden Dilemmas'.

Fons Trompenaars will discuss that in order to realize sustainable performance on all levels the dilemmas between the various stakeholders need to be reconciled. Since innovation essentially could be defined as combining values that are not easily joined, this process is created by and leads to innovation. It is the innovative capability of organizations, from process to product, from R&D to HR that will lead to sustainability. This needs a new type of leadership. Organizations often focus on systems and process changes. Fons’ key message, however, is the importance of behaviors and actions by leaders and managers that can lead to a supportive climate that respects and reinforces creativity and innovation essential to sustainable performance.

Thought Leadership MasterClass

The Key to Sustainable Organizational Performance

Fons Trompenaars will address how to assess the wealth creating processes of a company before these show up in financial reports. Recent events in the financial world, affecting the economies of many countries, have shown the necessity of an approach which gives clear and sound indication of the future performance of a company, well before the financials of the past have been consolidated. The future strength and performance of an organization depend on the way leadership and management deal with the tensions between the five major entities within any organization: Business Processes, People, Clients, Shareholders and Society. The ways in which these tensions are addressed and resolved determine the future strength and opportunities of an organization.

Fons Trompenaars proposes that all five stakeholders are necessary for business success and sustainable performance and that gains by a corporation on all five segments are measurable and can be raised in concert with one another. During this Master Class Fons will address the challenges that need to be faced if one wants to realize sustainable performance and the requisite organizational culture:

  • Managing the competing demands of shareholders, clients, employees, society, suppliers and business processes, for which there is a need to find effective, integrated solutions for all.
  • Identification of key issues and priorities within the organization from the organization’s and stakeholders’ point of view.
  • Strengths and weaknesses of the organization.
  • Responding to short-term priorities while ensuring positive impact on long-term sustainability.
  • How competent are leaders to reconcile dilemmas?
  • How ready is the organizational culture to support an environment for reconciling dilemmas.
  • Clarity about the future strategy and measurable business goals and how to monitor progress in sustainability: Key Reconciling Indicators (KRI’s).
